Our Story – M-art
It all began in Northern Finland in a small town called Kestilä. Jorma Marttila’s passion for woodworking led to a career as a carpenter. His father, Oskari Marttila, had spent his working life as a house builder, which sparked an interest in woodworking in the family’s youngest son as well.
The Marttila name has deep roots in Finland, but M-art was founded in 1991 when the carpenter and inventor wanted to build a woodworking bench that was more than just a traditional planing bench. There was nothing on the market that met his requirements and the demand – a technically more functional bench was needed. A key feature of the development process was a long, swiveling two-screw clamp, which securely holds each piece in place with four attachment points. This opens up many new possibilities for working, making precise work easier and faster.
Durability and Finnish craftsmanship were also key factors for the bench. Made in Northern Ostrobothnia from solid birch plywood, the bench is built to last for decades. For over 30 years, we have been manufacturing woodworking benches that have been delivered to the workshops of professionals, hobbyists, and educational institutions throughout Finland.
This is how Marttilan puu ja metalli (Marttila’s Wood and Metal) was born, whose woodworking bench M-art combines traditional craftsmanship with practical ingenuity. Each bench is designed and manufactured to last for decades with the customer in mind.
Our customers include instrument makers, decorative carvers, woodworkers, artisans, hobbyists, and educational institutions that value quality and functionality.
